WHY INTERNATIONAL EXAMS

Many international students find it extremely difficult to leave their jobs and families to study in the UK and furthermore, the costs incurred may be prohibitive. Online courses are very popular, but for skills-oriented courses such as ours, demonstration of the skills acquired is absolutely essential for certification credibility. Our solution has been to introduce overseas Exams Centres. The Exam Centre in the UAE is the first of our intended centres and the country is chosen for its central location. Naturally, students are very welcome to take their exams at our headquarters in Cardiff, should they wish to do so.

STUDYING OVERSEAS

As an independent practitioner studying with us, you will benefit considerably from our faculty’s feedback on your submitted assignments. If you are relatively inexperienced and wish to improve your skills, online study will help you improve knowledge of ultrasound use in your specialty and key skills. However, you will need access to clinical sessions where you undertake ultrasound scans with guidance. You will also benefit from simulation training if it is available in your country. Of course, you’re welcome to come to our headquarters in Cardiff and benefit from simulation practice at no extra charge or contact us to arrange clinical placement at our collaborating training centre in the Czech Republic. This will incur additional cost.

PREPARING FOR YOUR PRACTICAL EXAMS

PRACTICAL SKILLS

Clinical ultrasound sessions are necessary to develop your skills. All assignments you send will be marked and feedback sent to you. This should help you improve your practice. At the beginning of the course, you will be given a schedule to submit assignments on a regular basis as early feedback will help you maximise benefit and readies you for the practical exam. You may not be allowed to sit the end of module knowledge and practical exams if you have not completed submission of the assignments.

SIMULATION PRACTICE

You may not have access to a simulator locally. We offer our students in the Middle East intensive simulation based hands-on training, subject to sufficient number of students requesting it. This offer is restricted to students who have registered on our course in Cardiff and must be arranged well before the exam. We cover general medical, obstetrics, gynaecology and early pregnancy ultrasound skills. Students based in Iran, India, Pakistan and South Asia are welcome to attend. We do not give lectures. Fees are applicable.

THE PRACTICAL EXAM

If you have never used the simulator, we will allow you to practise on it for a limited period of time before the practical exam. This could be a day or two beforehand and will need to be arranged well in advance. Request for a longer period to practise is not guaranteed and will be chargeable. At the exam, you will be instructed to examine two cases relevant to your specialty, each of 20 minutes, using the simulator. Afterwards, you will be given five short case scenarios to scan, make a diagnosis and discuss with the examiner. One or two examiners will be marking your performance and we record all exams.

AFTER THE EXAM

After the exam, you may or may not receive verbal feedback. In some circumstances, other examiners will review the recorded scans for quality assurance. This is standard procedure to ensure fairness and to safeguard students and examiners’ interest. We submit all results for confirmation at the Exam Board. This may be few weeks after the actual exam and you will be notified formally of the outcome. Successful candidates will receive their certificate by email and a paper copy stamped by the institution seal by post. We may invite our outstanding students to join our team of overseas tutors!
