Fundamentals of Obstetric Ultrasound Course

Module duration

The Obstetric Ultrasound course module is delivered in two stages. The total duration of the module including revision and assessments is approximately 48 weeks.

Fundamentals of Obstetric Ultrasound

What will you learn?

In Fundamentals of Obstetric Ultrasound module, you will learn and be able to; (1) apply knowledge of fetal development, anatomy, physiology and pathology as relevant to pregnancy and their equivalent ultrasound features; (2) care for obstetric patients appropriately; (3) undertake ultrasound examinations using suitable equipment; (4) utilise your ultrasound skills to identify normal and abnormal conditions; (5) critically evaluate the role of relevant obstetric imaging techniques in a clinical context, and; (6) appraise your professional role within the framework of clinical governance.

Structure

This module will start with an initial study period of 8 weeks. In Stage 1 you will develop your core knowledge and skills. This is facilitated by faculty lectures, e-books links, a vast selection of videos demonstrating key obstetric scanning techniques and carefully selected open source learning material. During this stage you will be expected to demonstrate core ultrasound scanning skills on simulation, if it is available to you, and take a number of online quizzes to demonstrate your retention of learned material.

In Stage 2, you will submit for faculty review representative images or cine loops of common obstetric case scenarios identified on transabdominal and transvaginal scans such as confirming pregnancy location (intra- or extra-uterine), number and viability, assess normal early pregnancy at booking scans, recognise normal anatomical structures and obtain standard views at 20 weeks and measure head circumference, biparietal diameter, femur length, abdominal circumference etc. If appropriate to your role, you will utilise the above skills to formulate a plan of action.

During the course, you will have 30 hours of free practice on the ScanTrainer simulator in Cardiff. These may be taken in half days (09:00 – 13:00 or 13:00 – 17:00) or prearranged blocks of full-day practice. At the end of the module, you will have assessments of knowledge and practical skills.
