In Fundamentals in Human Reproduction module, you will learn and be able to; (1) apply knowledge in Human embryology and formation of the female genital tract to identify normal and abnormal female anatomy relevant to your practice; (2) analyse the main features of female endocrinology and assess any malfunction or failure; (3) summarise the main female infertility causes; (4) solve clinical fertility problems using appropriate diagnostic tests relevant to the female partner and generate an infertility diagnosis; (5) utilise knowledge and skills acquired in this and the “Andrology for Clinicians” course to propose a differential diagnosis and best treatment option(s) ranging from hormonal therapy to Intrauterine insemination, IVF and ICSI and; (6) appraise your professional role and accountability within the framework of clinical governance.
The module will start with an initial study period of 12 weeks – In Stage 1 you will develop your core knowledge and skills, which is facilitated by faculty lectures, e-books links, videos and carefully selected open source learning material. During this stage you will be expected to develop skills to appraise a full clinical history and undertake a thorough assessment of the female partner, describe and communicate to patients the normal anatomy, hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle, and ovulation. In Stage 2, you will submit for faculty review representative images or cine loops of common gynaecological case scenarios identified during diagnostic tests e.g. ultrasound, hysteroscopy or laparoscopy, for example a hydrosalpinx, ovarian cysts, fibroids, tubal assessment with HSG or HyCoSy. If appropriate to your role, you will utilise the above skills to formulate a plan of action.
During Stage 1 and Stage 2 you will undertake four short quizzes (two at each stage) for assessment of knowledge. At the end of the module, you will have assessments of knowledge and practical skills.
