Core & Advanced Vascular Ultrasound

What will you learn?

You will learn and be able to; (1) identify the anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the practice of vascular ultrasound, explain their importance in clinical practice and the wellbeing of the patient; (2) prepare and care for patients appropriately during ultrasound examinations and perform technical procedures using suitable equipment, accessories and risk assessment; (3) use ultrasound examination to identify normal and abnormal vascular conditions, demonstrating knowledge of relevant vascular ultrasound theory and the correct interpretation of ultrasound-produced images; (4) solve clinical vascular problems using diagnostic tests and the correct application of ultrasound theory; (5) critically evaluate the evidence base for current theory, methods and techniques used in vascular imaging and reflect on the impact of these in healthcare practice and; (6) appraise their professional role and accountability and defend their practice in the light of accepted standards of care, the changing health care needs of patients and the challenges faced by healthcare organisations

Structure

Core Vascular Ultrasound Module is the first year of the Vascular Ultrasound course and covers the fundamentals of this subject area including; imaging of the carotid and vertebral arteries; the lower and upper limb deep venous systems e.g. deep vein thrombosis; and the aorta.

Advanced Vascular Ultrasound Module is studied in the second year of the Vascular Ultrasound course and covers imaging of upper and lower limbs arterial systems, pelvic and abdominal vessels, and the superficial venous system.

Each module will start with an initial study period to develop your core knowledge and skills, and is facilitated by faculty notes, e-books links, a selection of videos demonstrating key scanning techniques and carefully selected open source learning material. During this stage you will undertake a number of online quizzes to demonstrate your retention of learned material. Following that, you will submit for faculty review representative images or cine loops of vascular case scenarios reflecting the above topics. If appropriate to your role, you will utilise the above skills to formulate a plan of action. At the end of each module, there will be assessments of knowledge and practical skills.
