Below you will find a series of the most commonly asked questions about the Medical and Educational Academy Online medical courses and learning platform. If you do not see the answer you are looking for contact us today.

The LCExchange is a free benefit to our membership that has been created to provide a forum for our members to discuss cases, techniques, procedures, new technology and learning methods related to medical education. Membership is exclusive to healthcare professionals and is not available to members of the public or to employees of, or individuals closely associated with industry. Postings to the LCExchange are subject to our disclaimer and terms of use.

Yes of course. Our philosophy is to support the personal development of all healthcare professionals through membership of the “Learning Community Exchange” and encourage interactions between them for the benefit of their patients. Joining our learning community and becoming an “affiliate member” is open to all healthcare professionals for unlimited period of time and is absolutely free of charge.

Affiliate membership entitles you to; (1) Free access to all open source learning material, (2) Credits for eligible completed activities, (3) Join “The Learning Community Exchange” (The LCExchange) and be part of the discussion and (4) Priority booking at our onsite training sessions and meetings.

We offer different levels of support to professional learning depending on the level of your membership. The benefits of Affiliate Membership are outlined above. Benefits of other membership levels are outlined in the following sections.

This is what most healthcare professionals want to do. You can upgrade your membership and become an Associate Member, which brings many benefits including participation in a structured learning and training ultrasound course(s), access to our onsite training facility for the relevant subject, faculty support, feedback and progress review and end-of-course assessment. Membership is valid for the duration of enrolment on the course. Fees are payable as per module(s) undertaken. You will also be eligible for discounts on registration fees for selected eligible meetings in the UK.

Yes, that will be very important. You obviously will need access to ultrasound training sessions and your mentor will facilitate that for you. Additionally, you can not undertake scans without appropriate supervision as you must comply with your hospital’s governance policies and General Medical Council guidance for Doctors. Your mentor will also be able to guide you during the training period with advice on scanning technique and dealing with patients’ questions. The same advice applies to nurses, midwives and sonographers working in their relevant departments. If you are enrolled on our endoscopic surgery modules, the essentials of surgical instrumentation and safety, basic, intermediate and advanced surgical skills modules can be completed with the guidance of our faculty using a specially designed “home simulator”. You can either buy or rent it for a fee while you’re training. Contact us for more information about our online medical courses

We would love to help you improve and gain new skills. If you meet the eligibility criteria and have a colleague in your clinic who can and agrees to mentor you then we will need to consider his background and skills before approving him and accepting you. Otherwise, we will be happy to consider you gaining the relevant training locally under the guidance of an expert in the field i.e. a local fellowship scheme. Again, we will need to know more about your trainer and his/her skills before accepting you on the programme. Remember that such a training scheme may incur additional fees that you will have to agree with the local trainer.

Indeed. Our Academic Membership will be available in the near future. We will support those who are enrolled on an Academic programme of study with unlimited access to our onsite training facility and online medical courses for the relevant subject, faculty support, feedback and progress review as well as regular in-course assessments. Fees are payable as per module(s) undertaken. Membership is valid for the duration of enrolment on the course. Academic members also benefit from discount on registration fees for selected eligible meetings in the UK.

Eligibility criteria for the professional development structured learning course(s) require you to: (i) Be a healthcare professional where ultrasound or endoscopic surgery are relevant to your clinical practice, (ii) Be in practice for two years or more in a relevant specialty where ultrasound or endoscopic surgery are regularly undertaken by yourself with or without supervision, (iii) Have access to high speed internet, (iv) Have the support of your employer to enrol on the programme (Employer reference will be sought) and (v) Submit with your application all necessary documentation. Enrolment on academic programmes of study in the UK are subject to the Higher Education Institution regulations and more information will be provided when we have further details.

Primary Care is an important area where continuing professional development is mandatory. We are in discussion with many potential partners in industry to avail their learning resource free of charge to our Learning Community members. This resource will benefit the entire team of healthcare professionals in Primary Care. Join the LCExchange and we’ll keep you informed!

Yes indeed. You may revert to the free Affiliate Member status or join our Elite Membership, which is specific for those who have successfully completed either a Professional or an Academic Postgraduate course. It entitles the member to participate in the CPD programme and access all new educational material, limited access to our simulation training facility subject to availability, limited submission of images for faculty review and feedback as well as receive a substantial discount on eligible meetings. Full range of online CPD learning is available to members upon payment of an annual fee.

Certainly. Our state of the art abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound simulators as well as the laparoscopic skills trainer online medical courses are available for all trainees. Contact us on 029 20682068 and we’ll book your training session. Fees apply depending on the frequency and length of your training session(s).

Yes absolutely. It is open to all Health Care Professionals who wish to further their education. You can apply if you are a complete novice to ultrasound scanning as you can practice your skills on the simulator here in Cardiff.

Yes, if you work for the NHS, and are a nurse, midwife, AHP or trainee, you qualify for the reduced rate of £450 (subject to change if module fee increases) per module.

We have two intakes each year – 1st March and 1st September. You can apply by completing the online application form once you have registered free of charge to the Learning Community. Applications are accepted throughout the year, and you can apply right up to the intake date.

Yes, the ‘Essentials of Imaging Science and Technology’ is a compulsory module for the Professional Diploma in Practical Ultrasound course. Our students think it is a great advantage in understanding ultrasound scanning.

Yes we have modules specific to the RCOG curriculum: Basic Early Pregnancy Ultrasound (8-12 weeks), Basic Ultrasound Assessment of Fetal Size, Liquor and the Placenta and Ultrasound of Normal Fetal Anatomy. We also offer Ultrasound for Sexual and Reproductive Health Practitioners (FSRH Ultrasound Curriculum)

No, you simply need to register to the Learning Community free of charge. You will receive an email from the course administrator providing you a link and log in details to the Learning Community Exchange. No you don’t need to purchase any books, as we provide an e-library service which you pay for when you enrol on the course. All books are therefore provided for the duration of your course, and you are directed to the chapters relevant to the module. The e-library is compulsory for all learners.

Yes, we have an experienced faculty who will be available for video conference calls when required. We have learners globally, who communicate via email and/or video calls.

Yes we have an online medical course module called ‘Foundations of General Medical Ultrasound’, as well as the imaging science, obstetrics, gynaecological, early pregnancy and fetal echo modules.

Our online medical courses have in-course ‘single best answer’ quizzes, on-line discussions and assignments, and a final theory and practical exam. For the clinical modules, learners will be required to submit summative and reflective practice assignments from their own work place to show acquisition of skills.

Each module costs £850.00 for consultants, specialists and non-training staff. Healthcare Professionals, Nurses, Midwives and Non-consultant staff working for the NHS qualify for the reduced rate of £450 per module (subject to change if the rates per module increases). To achieve the Professional Diploma in Practical Ultrasound, you must complete 3 modules. One module must be ‘Essentials of Imaging Science and Technology’, and you can then pick a minimum of 2 other modules. You do not have to do all 3 modules at the same time if you wish to spread the cost, as we have 2 intakes each year – March and September.

Yes, payment for each ultrasound module must be paid in full before you can have access to the course (March or September intakes). You can pay by credit card (excluding American Express) if you wish. You could also take each module at different intakes to spread the cost.

You can use the simulator as much as you need to acquire your skills in ultrasound. The simulator is available from 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday, and is subject to availability.

Yes, we are accredited by the European Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) The UEMS-EACCME® began its activities in January 2000 with the mutual recognition of accreditation of EU-wide and international CME-CPD activities for live educational events through the awarding of European CME credits (ECMECs) to individual medical specialists, allowing the recognition and exchange of CME credits between all European countries. In April 2009 the UEMS-EACCME® launched the accreditation of e-learning materials. The UEMS-EACCME® sets itself as the central link between the National Accreditation Authorities (NAAs), the UEMS Specialist Sections and Boards (S&Bs), the European Specialty Accreditation Boards (ESABs) and the Providers of CME activities. The UEMS-EACCME® has mutual recognition agreements with the American Medical Association (AMA) for live events and e-learning materials and with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for live events only.

At current we have a total of 8 modules available. You can study as many modules as you wish, but you must do a minimum of 3 to achieve the professional diploma, and one of the modules must be ‘Essentials of Imaging Science and Technology’. You can do the modules one a time, starting a new one at each intake (March and September), or you can take 3 at the same time, and if you wish. You could also take further modules when these have been completed.

If there are enough Learners taking the exams overseas, we may be able to arrange a regional exam centre. If this is not possible, yes you would need to come to Cardiff to sit the final practical exam for the clinical modules.

Yes most definitely. The distance learning programme will provide lectures and video’s that will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will also have access to the ultrasound sound simulator (TVS and TAS) where you can learn and practice your skills.

Yes, we have a ‘Fundamentals of Obstetric Ultrasound’ module, and ‘Obstetric Ultrasound for Advanced Practitioners’.

Yes you can, as our ultrasound online medical courses are a distance learning programme, and all material can be accessed on-line, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Yes it would, as you can use the simulator to learn and practice your skills. The course material also contains lectures and videos, and our experienced faculty are on hand to advise and help.
