Why is Continuing Professional Development (CPD) important?
/in Learning/by Admin MedEd AcademySo why is CPD important? After all, you’ve finished your degree, graduated and you have the job! The first part of the mission is accomplished, time sit back and relax? Sure, you can have a break but don’t take too long as you’ll be left behind your colleagues, including the ones with many years’ experience.
CPD is important because it enables you to continue to be competent in your profession. This is an ongoing process and will continue throughout your career.
The main aim of CPD is to safeguard the public, the employer, the individual and the individual’s career.
Here are a few points of why CPD is beneficial and of high importance:
- Continuing Professional Development ensures you keep up with the current standards of others in the same field.
- CPD ensures that you maintain and enhance your knowledge.
- Continuing Professional Development ensures that you and your knowledge remain relevant and up to date.
- The pace of change is fast! More so now than it has been before and this is now the ‘norm’ of what we live and work in. If you do not keep your knowledge and skills up to date, you’ll get left behind as your knowledge will become out-dated.
- Continuing Professional Development enables you to become more effective in the workplace. This will help to advance in your career and move on to new positions where you can, manage, mentor, lead and influence others.
- CPD helps maintain your interest and keeps you, yourself, interesting. Focused CPD opens you up to new possibilities, new knowledge and new skill areas.
- Continuing Professional Development can lead the public to become increasingly confident in individual professions.
The important of continuing professional development should not be underestimated. This is a career-long obligation for practising professionals.
Need to update your CPD? Check out our website on how we can help you do this.
